B 29s on Tinian by Irv Winkler
World War II-era look at “Biggest and busiest airport in the world in 1945.” Based on over 1000 slides our father, Irving Winkler, shot with his U.S. Army Signal Corps unit, Dave Wilson, co-historian of the 6th Bomb Group Association compiled this slide show. Tinian Island in the Marianas, Fall 1944 – June 1945: P-51 Mustang fighters, B-29 Bombers, as well as assemblies (baseball game, New Dock dedication, U.S.O. show). Japanese Soldiers surrendering, Civilian life, Construction, Damaged Japanese and American Aircraft.

This 46 minute “Highlight” version of the 5-hour Irving Winkler Pacific Films (1942-45) is designed for veterans who served in the Marianas and their families, as well as history buffs.
The 5 hour film has extensive footage of Hawaii, Palmyra Island, the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu) and civilian life on Tinian.

What is in the Film?
Irving Winkler Pacific Films (1942-1945)* is a silent film, with no audio, so notes will be included to the download of this version of the film, to help you identify what you are watching.
This film, digitized from 16mm movie film, much in color, features President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a motorcade in Honolulu, July 1944, seated with General Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Chester Nitmitz; First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in Honolulu, August 1943; Natives and U.S. Military personnel on Palmyra Island and the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu); and extensive footage of Tinian Island, in the Marianas. Scenes on Tinian include several B-29 Superfortress bombers (Including one of the 1st landings); P-51 Mustang fighters; damaged Japanese aircraft, tank, artillery and buildings; Japanese soldiers surrendering in the field; Japanese, Korean and native (Chamorros) civilians, Assemblies, with lots of military personnel in the crowds, include Civilian Talent Show, USO Show, Baseball and new dock dedication.

Why doesn’t Winkler Enterprises offer DVDs, USB thumb drives or other formats?
Better quality and better affordability! A digital file usually has better resolution than a DVD. No inventory or manufacturing costs mean we pass savings onto you. Downloads only means No Sales Tax! No Shipping Costs!
Instead, you can download to any storage device. May we suggest downloading directly to a USB thumb drive plugged into your computer. Why? Most TVs now have a USB port. After loading your own USB thumb drive with the movie, photos and/or slide show, you can stick in into your TV’s USB port and watch on your big screen, as well as your computer. What is Winkler Enterprises?
Our father, Irving Winkler, who served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II. saved these photos and film footage from his time in the Pacific Theater, October 1942 to June 1945.
Winkler Enterprises is the way The Estate of Irving and Reba Winkler makes their collection of films and photos available to residents of the Marianas, Veterans, and their families, as well as the general public. Besides selling digital copies of the film footage and photos, Winkler Enterprises has donated copies of the entire collection to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Archives at the Northern Marianas College, Saipan and the B-29 Museum, Pratt, Kansas. Winkler Enterprises also loans out or licenses material to military veterans’ reunions and other gatherings.
